Marpole

Fish and Chips - Mr. Pickwicks

Mr. Pickwicks is, quite literally, a small hole in the wall that’s nestled in a shopping plaza dominated by a 7-eleven that takes up half the plaza as 7-elevens do. It’s not a restaurant that I would have noticed had I not received an email asking me to review it from an avid fan of their food. Here, in a nutshell, is what I found: Great food, an amazing amount of fun and goodwill packed into a puny little container (Read the bit about destroying the car…:), and what is possibly the only opportunity I’ll have in my life to have a man holding public office prepare, and serve, me food... Read More

Broadway

Russian-French - Accents

When I first sat down with Igor to do our review I was pleasantly surprised at the excitement he had in his voice when he spoke about the Accents. I mean, even for the most dedicated people, after working at a job for over five years a certain level of tedium is bound to set in. But not in this case. Now granted, it may be because I caught him just as he was about to overhaul the menu, moving from a traditional style menu to a unified pricing scheme. But even so, I could see that this man really enjoyed what he was doing. I soon found out why. He is uniquely qualified to be running a restaurant. So qualified in fact, that he has a Master's Degree in it... Read More

Downtown

Fusion - DV8

DV8's entrance
this month
It was quite refreshing to review DV8. As many other restaurants are centered around eating, the quick cycle of customers ordering, eating their fill and leaving promptly is considered a good thing for business. While this is good for the restaurant, it's not so good for customers wanting to hang out. I was actually a bit offended by a place I tried several nights ago. Their policy was a one drink minimum for each patron, which is okay. The problem is that ordering actual food in lieu of drinks was a no-no. They'll charge you extra cash at the end. Ordering one for the road was also a no-no, because if you order take out, you have to leave...nice people. DV8 stands in stark contrast, as its owner Jason was quick to mention, because the excellently eclectic menu is just the beginning of the DV8 experience... Read More

West Broadway

Mongolian - Mongolie Grill

The way the restaurant currently is, the atmosphere isn't particularly romantic, nor is the decor particularly striking. But we can still honestly point to Mongolie Grill as an ideal place for a first(or subsequent) date. There are two points supporting our seemingly rash assertion. Firstly, all of the employees in attendance(Michel & Duff) during our review met their significant others inside the restaurant. Michel, the owner, met his wife Parm while working at the grill. Duff (server...not beer), was actually a regular who started dating one of the waitresses. He's now an employee as well. You're probably going to say: "That's only for employees! What about the rest of us?" Fear not. There's still the second point making this a good date place. To examine that, we now point to the rather unique menu, which consists of well over 100 billion possible combinations... Read More

Stanley Park

Seafood - Fish House

Stanley Park has always been a popular romantic hangout for us Vancouverite couples. As one of the restaurants nestled at the edge of the park, The Fish House has enjoyed an elite status not only because of its excellent location on the edge between the natural serenity of Stanley Park and the hustle and bustle of downtown Vancouver, but also for the plethora of awards it has earned, including Vancouver's Choice for Best seafood and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence... Read More

False Creek

Canadian Fusion - Fiddlehead Joe's

Nighttime view of the bridge
from Fiddlehead's
We were asked to review Fiddleheads by a user who listed it as one of her favorite restaurants. By day, the restaurant is a chic, casual cafe well suited to the assorted tourists and exercisers passing by the False Creek waterfront. By night, the bare tables are covered with linen and the candles and crystal are brought out, turning the place into a romantic hot-spot with a great view of the harbor. But the thing that really interested me was the name of the place. Being the culinary dunce that I am, my first question to Joe when I sat down with him was "Why Fiddleheads?" Truth be known, I was expecting some obscure reference to Topol and "The Fiddler on the Roof". Nothing could be further from the truth... Read More

New Westminster

Italian - Amorosa

When we first walked in, it was just after the lunch rush, and obviously so. There were several tables of patrons leaning back in their chairs with large, empty plates in front of them opening up one of the newspapers provided for some after meal reading. While I was taking this in another patron stepped in, greeted the waitress by name, grabbed a paper and proceeded to what I guess was his usual spot. I was actually tempted to pick one up and settle in myself :) but I had a review to write... Read More

Commercial Drive

Greek - Bouzyos

If the father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" opened up a more refined restaurant instead of a diner, Bouzyos would be it. The owner, John, even has a daughter named Toula. We caught up with John one sunny morning and asked him what made Bouzyos special, and why he opened the restaurant. He told us that his intent was to introduce people to the Greek culture through the food, atmosphere and entertainment of the restaurant... Read More

Turkish - Olive Cafe

Turkish restaurants in the lower mainland are quite rare. If you look under 'Meal Type' at mybc.com, you won't even find 'Turkish' as a type of cuisine. Olive Cafe, in addition to being Turkish, is also Vegetarian. In fact, Mert(Matt) the owner claims that it's the only vegetarian Turkish Restaurant in North America, if not the world... Read More

Mexican - Tio Pepes

Of the restaurants we've reviewed so far, Tio Pepes has earned the most accolades since its opening in '98. For the last two years, the Sun hailed it the best Mexican restaurant, and it has placed fourth several time in the Golden Plate awards. The place offers excellent value, with a meal for two averaging about $20 plus drinks... Read More
